Abnormal Psychology --

Abnormal Psychology PSY 340

A study of a variety of behavioral abnormalities in children and adults. This study will take place within a historical overview of explanations applied to abnormal behavior and modes of treatment which logically followed from such explanations. A practicum is required. Introduction to Psychotherpies PSY 380

An introduction to the major therapy methods in use today. A brief examination of the nature of mental health and dysfunctions from the organic, interpersonal and intra-psychic perspectives and a study of the theories and treatment methods of contemporary psychotherapies. Youth Development and Culture PSY 383, HI 404, ETHS 381

 

A review of important theoretical and methodological issues in the area of cross-cultural and multicultural psychology. The course permits the instructor and students to examine cultural issues in psychology which are either not covered in the curriculum or which deserve more in-depth treatment than is possible in a regular course. Topics may include: Asian American Psychology; Youth Development and Culture; Psychological Interventions and Cultural Diversity; Multicultural Counseling; and Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Identities over the Lifespan.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 
Psychology of Mood Disorders PSY 385H

We will critically examine the current knowledge on mood disorders in order to gain advanced knowledge on the historical development, classification of the disorders, and the role of genetics and neurobiology. We will also examine the role of gender (both male and female), class issues, culture, personality and developmental factors that can play a role in the development of mood disorders. Course texts will be a combination of theory and research, professional, popular psychology, and autobiographical approaches to mood disorders. A community project or practicum may be required.

 
 
Graduate School & Careers in Psychology PSY 488

This course will help students select and work towards a career in psychology. Students will complete a series of exercises and assignments to help select a career path. Students will select several graduate programs, licensing requirements, and other aspects of a career in the chosen area.
